Position players first
Let's start with the easy ones.
Prince Fielder
A+
Say what you want about it being a contract year, the big fella has established himself as the front runner for NL MVP. Slash line of .302/.417/.588 1.004 OPS. On pace for 40 HR 130 RBI and a career low 103 K's. 3.2 WAR
Ryan Braun
A
.320/.402/.559 4.2 WAR already. On pace for his usual offensive numbers along with 40 walks, just 17 off his career high.
Rickie Weeks
A-
.271/.341/.466 His numbers are pretty close to last year, except for only getting hit 5 times well off his 25(!) from last year. Defense is still an issue keeping him from a solid A.
the next level
Nyjer Morgan
solid A
.333/.364/.507 and 1.3 WAR in 160 official plate appearances. He's already tied his career high with 3 HR's and provided a much needed spark to this team.
Jonathan Lucroy
B+
.287/.329/.430 0.7 WAR. That WAR is 1.3 offense, -0.6 defense. We're going to see a trend here, this team's defense is bad. It starts behind the plate. It's only his second season and he's probably over his head on a team with World Series hopes. His offense upgrades him to B+
Corey Hart
B
.257/.339/.467 1.1 WAR Corey started the year on the DL and won't come close to last year's 31 HR 102 RBI and his average is down a bit but his OBP is right at his career numbers.
it gets ugly from here
Casey McGehee
D
.225/.276/.320 -1.2 WAR. horrid. I'm not going to pile on Casey, his 3 run pinch hit HR to end the Dbacks series keeps him from summer school. That said a .320 OPS is unacceptable for a corner infielder in the Majors much less for a team with playoff expectations.
Yuniesky Betancourt
D+
.240/.260/.344 -0.5 WAR, -0.4 offense -0.1 defense. Hey his defense isn't as bad as his offense. That says a lot.
Carlos Gomez
D
.224/.272/.378 1.1 WAR, 0.9 of that because of defense. The one player that gets to play because of defense. Unfortunately Gomez's inability to take a walk will continue to inhibit his route to an everyday starter. His slugging of .378 would be a career high and 1 more HR will tie his career high. Carlos needs to realize he is not a power hitter and put the ball on the ground and use his speed like Nyjer Morgan or he will be without a spot in the lineup.
Craig Counsell
D-
.175/.279/.216 Not often you see an OBP better than Slugging. We all love Counsell but he is probably a 9th inning defensive replacement at this point.
Mark Kotsay
D+
.253/.319/.329 average is ok but nothing else is impressive. 1 HR 12 RBI
George Kottaras, Josh Wilson
incomplete
OK moving on to the pitchers:
Yovani Gallardo
B+
10-5, 3.76 ERA, 8.0 K/9
13 HR's given up, already more than last year. Hits/9 are a little high. K's/9 are down.
Shawn Marcum
B+
7-3 3.32 ERA 8.3 K/9
nearly the same numbers as Yo, 12 HR's given up. Was a clear A before getting injured.
Randy Wolf
B-
6-6 3.72 ERA he's never been a strikeout pitcher but he's kept his ERA down and his WHIP and hits/HR per 9 are right at career averages.
Zach Greinke
D+
5.66 ERA
I have another post in the works about Greinke although Miller Park Drunk sort of beat me to it
Chris Narveson
C
5-5 4.86 ERA 0.6 WAR.....solidly average
the relievers
Jonathan Axford
A
aside from that unfortunate opening day debacle, Ax has been pretty much lights out
Kameron Loe
C-
4.87 ERA not sure why Roenicke is obsessed with throwing him out there in the 8th inning
Latroy Hawkins
A
0.78 ERA
fountain of youth??
Takashi Saito
F
3 innings pitched
Zach Braddock
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
