some thoughts about Braun/Fielder

Ok, I haven't had time post anything about Ryan Braun's recent $105 million contract extention since it was announced.  I have absolutely no problem with this.   He had already signed a team-friendly deal for $45 million through 2015 (could this contract possibly look dumber??) which blew me away just knowing he'd be with the Brewers that long.  Knowing he'll likely be with the team his whole career sans a Brett Favre (!!) ending is unbelievable.  Yes that money is steep, I didn't thing I'd ever see the Brewers open the wallet for that kind of cash.  On the other hand is that really going to be that outrageous in 2018 & 19??  Don't know.  This blog is called Brewers in 11, whoever decides to start Brewers in '18 can deal with that, I'll be old by then.  (fine, older!!)

On the other hand....*deep breath*.... should they have given that extension for 2016-2020 Braun when he is already signed through 2015 and we don't know how 2011-2015 is going to play out??  It's a bit of the Pujols dilemma for the Cardinals, he wants $30 mil/year and he's earned it, will he be worth it at the end of the contract, no.  But do you overpay for the future like you underpaid for the past??  That is the $105 million question.  Baseball Reference links him to some pretty good players at the same age (I hear that Kiner fellow is in the hall of fame!!)

As a fan I like it, we know the core of this team minus Fielder (more on that in a minute) is together through 2012 and the majority of them beyond, so at least we see chance to be a winning team at least in the near future despite gutting the farm system this past off-season.

On to Prince.  HE'S SUPER EXCITED TO SEE BRAUN GET AN EXTENSION AND WANTS TO SIGN ONE HIMSELF!!!!!! whatever, he's leaving.  I have come to accept that since the Brewers didn't trade him before the deadline last season.  No way they come up with the money to keep him unless he has a religious epiphany and decides he'll play for whatever in Milwaukee.  The overwhelming rumor is that he'll be a Cub.  Ugh.  That will be about as easy to take as #4 in a Vikings jersey (!!)  Well at least the Cubs are already preparing for him to fail.  Never change Cub fan, you and Viking fan can share not winning forever.

Crap I wanted to work a Geoff Jenkins reference in somewhere, well he still sucks.

test don't click here

wow are you stupid

more Phillies, less Nationals!!

Ok, that is a joke obviously. After the abortion in DC over the weekend and a hair pulling (if mine was long enough) 12 inning win the Brewers got back to .500 at 8-8. That would have been as hard of a loss to take in game #16 as probably possible. If Kintzler (first career win!!) would have made a mistake in the 12th to Howard with 2 on up 3 I would be going out in the morning for a new phone/tv/wall repair kit or all of the above.

Axford...oh Axford

sigh

I could get pissed about tonight's game very easily. We came back to tie the game in the 9th and sent it to extra innings. Then what was expected happened: defense. This team is garbage at defense and is gonna be there is no debating that. It is something we have to learn to accept and it will directly cost us 3 or 4 more games and probably a couple more indirectly.

/deep breath

still over .500

first week thoughts

Doing this in bullet points because it's late and I'm tired, holy crap I think there was just 2 giant spiders doing it in my window sill....anyhoo

  • Ok so the first 4 weren't so good, the next 3 actually were encouraging, good pitching from the usual (Gallardo) and unusual (Estrada) and uncertain (Marcum)
  • Axford converted 2 saves, not totally comfortable with him yet this year but 2/3 so far isn't bad
  • Braun and Weeks are mashing, Prince is going for singles apparently
  • Nyjer Morgan needs to be on the field every day right now, and he appears to fit in unbelievably with this team
  • Gomez has been ok but might be the odd man out when Hart returns
  • defense will continue to be an issue
  • Sedar at 3rd base coach will alternate being awesome/GOOD GOD WHY DID YOU SEND HIM
  • Randy Wolf's OPS is 3.000....that'll probably go down
  • hey at least we're not the shitty Red Sox or Rays wow, losers
  • bring it on Cubs

whew

Yo! Yo! Yo! Yo! Yo!

leave it to Yovani Gallardo to take it on himself to win the Brewers first game all by himself scoring the only run and throwing a 2-hit shutout for a 1-0 win. Not this first time he's had to do it like this.

Ron Roenicke apparently monitoring my twitter feed let Yo go 111 pitches, I would have let him go 200.

Did anyone else do anything this game other than getting thrown out at the plate, I don't care.

Peace out monkey.

Ron Roenicke gets some advice

0-3, ugh

how did you manage to win 77 games with this team

shrugs

seriously, you didn't even have Greinke or Marcum how did you win any games with this team

shrugs

I mean we're basically putting the same team out there minus a couple injuries and we're 0-3 any words of advice??

Opening Day Revisited

After having some time to calm down (see previous post for the less calm reaction) let's take a more rational look at Opening Day.

Back to back home runs from Rickie (league MVP through 2 innings) and Gomez (!) to start the season for the first time in Brewers history. Ryan Braun 2/3 with 2 walks (!) 3 runs and a home run for himself. A good start from Gallardo, decent enough relief from Loe and Saito, and then the 9th happened.
