Hard times on the road

The Crew got destroyed 12-2 against the Yankees.

On the road.

How is this still even possible??

This team is too good to be so bad on the road. Just how bad?? Let's take a look.

(Again if you don't like looking at numbers and tables, you can stop here)

keep in mind this is with the home/road split 40/40 so all raw numbers are on a level playing field.

home away
record 29-11 15-25

That's a virtual tie with the Phillies, percentage points ahead for best in MLB at home. 2nd least wins on the road behind the Orioles, tied with the Cubs and Astros.

home away
average .282 .231

2nd best at home, 5th worse on the road

home away
OBP .355 .289

2nd best at home, 2nd worse on the road

home away
BB% 9.4% 6.8%

Home cooking??

home away
BB/K 0.52 0.37

2nd best at home, 4th worse on the road

home away
BABIP .317 .263

That's batting average balls in play. Fangraphs can explain the stat but .290-.310 is the norm, anything outside of that is likely to regress toward the mean. Neither of the Brewers numbers fall within that range, home above, road below.

Ok you get the point about the hitting. What about pitching??

home away
ERA 3.60 4.04

home away
HR 30 41

home away
BB 99 122

home away
WHIP 1.20 1.34

home away
BABIP .297 .289

Hey score one for the road somehow, although if you check the link above .297 was the league average last year.

home away
LOB% 72.3% 72.3%

I'm going to call that a tie.

home away
FIP 3.09 3.93

Explanation here. It basically tells you how the pitchers would have done assuming the defense does it's job. Comparing the 2 here assumes the defense played the same on the road as they did at home.

I don't see any home/road defense numbers so I can't really dig into that one. The interesting thing looking at the defense is the Brewers are essentially right at the median being the worst team with a UZR still above 0. If you want an explanation on UZR here you go. Good luck making it through all of that.

If you made it through all of that and aren't pulling your hair out. Bright side: guaranteed to be in first place at the halfway point. Things could be worse.
