Game 5

Game 2 was awful.   There really isn't anything more to say about it.

Game 5 delayed reactions

Don't you hate when real life gets in the way of keeping up with a baseball blog that you do in your spare time for free??

I know right??

It's Saturday night and I finally have my first (sober(well kinda)) chance to sit down and reflect on the dramatics of Friday's Game 5 and the emotional roller coaster it took me (well, all of us...but specifically me).

Not a big fan of the desert

I don't particularly want to talk about Game 3.  Shawn Marcum just didn't have it and the Brewers were once again unable to figure out Arizona rookie Josh Collmenter.

Collmenter has pitched his three best games against the Brewers with a WPA of .388, .462, and now tonight really only .187??

After Jerry Hairston Jr doubled off of Daniel Hudson with 1 out in the 6th things kind of took a turn for the worst when Brad Ziegler took over:

Style points don't count

Lead story, it's a win over second place St. Louis, a 4 game lead, and a guarantee of returning home in first place with the suddenly Pirate-like Pirates and Dodgers coming to Miller Park. Not to look ahead too much, still 2 games left at Busch Stadium and a chance to put some breathing room on the division lead.

No it wasn't pretty, the usual suspects reared their ugly heads: bad defense and bad base running.

Bases loaded with nobody out and 3-4-5 coming up in the 5th gets 0 runs.

Your heroes in extra innings were of course Casey McGehee and Yuni B (long time fan!! heh)

Honestly I was hoping for 1 in this series, now I'm hoping for 2...or maybe even 3.

And some one get Chris Narveson a pair of safety scissors please!!!

I'm taking full credit

• 5 home runs.
• 2 by Yuni B (!!) along with 3 hits and 4 RBI.
• 3 hits for McGehee and Lucroy as well.
• every starter sans Prince with a hit (he'll come around).

Sure it's only been 4 games since I suggested a lineup change but 3-1 with only a dominating performance from Josh Collmenter Monday resulting in a loss.

Ok ok, 4 games isn't enough of a sample size to be all that meaningful but it's worked so far.

On the down side, the next post is going to be about Craig Counsell...and it's going to hurt to write.

A day at the ball park

We take a break from our regularly scheduled Yuni bashing for actual baseball coverage.  I made my annual trek to Miller Park for the first half finale for the Brewers and Reds on Sunday.  It started off poorly with Randy Wolf giving up a run in the first without giving up a hit.  Then it was back and forth runs for the next couple innings before things calmed down and Wolf and his counterpart Dontrelle Willis settled in for a few scoreless innings and a lot of LOB's (8 for each team) and a lot of walks (10 plus 2 HBP).  Then the 9th happened.  I was prepared to go into the break on a loss either tied or a game back of STL and a respectable split with nemesis Reds.

Brewers win 5-1, Cardinals kind of had a bad inning and the Brewers are back in 1st place.

Ok, not quite as excited about it as the first time and I have a feeling I might have to write this post a couple dozen times the rest of this season.

Greinke threw a great game, clutch offense in the 7th from the Brewers instead of the other team. A home run from the much maligned Yuni Betancourt for his 3rd RBI in 2 games (not maligned by me of course neither here nor here I have no idea who hacked my blog and posted that garbage.

So the Brewers are back in front of the Cardinals who are sans Pujols for at least a month (what you heard that already??)

Now let's hope Marcum is ok to go in game 3

frustrating

Ron Roenicke knows the rules of baseball right??

Runner on 3rd, 1 out how on earth do you not walk 1 or even 2 to set up a double play/force out at the plate. This is 2 games in a row.

Even worse, 2 in a row against the bleeping Cubs.

Two games in a row where the 5 man infield didn't work.

Yes we're still tied for first since the Cardinals gagged against the Nats but these are games we can't afford to be giving away like that.

how sweep it is

That. Was. Awesome.

No, not the horrible title of this post, the sweep of the Cardinals and let's say hello to first place kids. Let me repeat that, the first place Milwaukee Brewers. What day is it you say, June 12?? 3 1/2 months left in the season that's a long time and a lot of games. Don't give me that, this was huge. Best record in baseball over the last month. A sweep over the first place second place Cardinals. Two out of three would have been a success after dropping 2/3 against the Mets. Two out of three was acceptable down 3-0 going in the bottom of the 6th.

Then the 6th happened. Keep this info on the hush-hush...you probably shouldn't pitch to Prince Fielder. Hello sweep. Hello first place.

Road trip to Wrigley and Fenway, bring it!!

Yo! Yo! Yo! Yo! Yo!

leave it to Yovani Gallardo to take it on himself to win the Brewers first game all by himself scoring the only run and throwing a 2-hit shutout for a 1-0 win. Not this first time he's had to do it like this.

Ron Roenicke apparently monitoring my twitter feed let Yo go 111 pitches, I would have let him go 200.

Did anyone else do anything this game other than getting thrown out at the plate, I don't care.

Opening Day Revisited

After having some time to calm down (see previous post for the less calm reaction) let's take a more rational look at Opening Day.

Back to back home runs from Rickie (league MVP through 2 innings) and Gomez (!) to start the season for the first time in Brewers history. Ryan Braun 2/3 with 2 walks (!) 3 runs and a home run for himself. A good start from Gallardo, decent enough relief from Loe and Saito, and then the 9th happened.
